Evening Atmosphere at Khan el-Khalili
As the sun sets over Cairo, Khan el-Khalili transforms from a bustling daytime souk into a magical evening destination. The narrow alleys glow with lantern light, and the aroma of shisha tobacco and mint tea fills the air. Historic cafes like El Fishawy — open since 1773 — become the heart of the neighborhood, drawing locals and travelers alike for evening conversations, backgammon games, and people-watching.
The evening energy at Khan el-Khalili is distinctly Cairene: shopkeepers call out to passersby, musicians occasionally perform in courtyard cafes, and the mix of tourists and locals creates a vibrant, safe atmosphere. Most shops remain open until 10–11 PM, making it the perfect time for souvenir shopping in cooler conditions. Al-Azhar Mosque nearby is beautifully lit at night, adding to the cultural ambiance.

Tips for Korean Travelers at Night
Khan el-Khalili is approximately 10–15 minutes by taxi from downtown Cairo. The area is generally safe for evening visits, but it is advisable to stay on the main alleys and keep valuables secure. Bargaining is expected at the souvenir shops — start at roughly half the asking price and negotiate with a friendly attitude. Credit cards are accepted at larger shops, but smaller stalls prefer cash (Egyptian pounds).
For Korean travelers, the best approach is to arrive around 6–7 PM: explore the market as it comes alive, enjoy dinner at one of the courtyard restaurants serving Egyptian staples like koshari and grilled meats, then settle into a historic cafe for tea or shisha before heading back around 10 PM. The nearby Hussein Mosque square is an excellent orientation point and meeting spot for guided evening tours.
