How is Saqqara different from Giza?
Saqqara is the older, more experimental pyramid field. While Giza has the three iconic giant pyramids, Saqqara has the Step Pyramid of Djoser (the oldest stone building in the world), the Bent Pyramid, and the Red Pyramid. It is much less crowded, and you can often enter the Red Pyramid alone.
Should I visit Saqqara or Giza if I only have one day?
If you have only one day, we recommend our Cairo Private Tour which includes Giza. If you have two days, add Saqqara on the second day — they complement each other perfectly and show the full evolution of pyramid building.
Can I enter the pyramids at Saqqara?
Yes, you can enter the Red Pyramid and the Bent Pyramid at Dahshur (part of the Saqqara necropolis). The Red Pyramid is less crowded than the Great Pyramid and you can descend into the burial chamber alone. The Step Pyramid itself is not open for entry, but you can walk around it.
Is lunch available near Saqqara?
There are several local restaurants near Saqqara offering grilled meats, stuffed pigeon (hamam), and traditional Egyptian dishes. Your guide will recommend a clean and comfortable option. A picnic lunch surrounded by desert views can also be arranged.

Less Crowded Than Giza
Saqqara receives far fewer visitors than the Giza Pyramids, offering a more intimate experience. You can often enter the Red Pyramid completely alone. The vast necropolis covers 7km of desert with pyramids, mastabas, and tombs spanning 3,000 years. Take your time exploring — there is no rush at Saqqara.
Step Pyramid Details
The Step Pyramid of Djoser is the world's oldest large-scale stone building (c. 2670 BC). You cannot enter it but you can walk around the entire complex including the Heb-Sed court, the South Tomb, and the colonnaded entrance. The restoration work has been extensive — it looks remarkably intact for its age.
Dahshur Pyramids
The Bent Pyramid and Red Pyramid at Dahshur are often the highlight of the Saqqara tour. The Bent Pyramid shows an architectural experiment where the angle was changed mid-construction. The Red Pyramid is Egypt's first true smooth-sided pyramid and you can enter its burial chamber for free (included in the Dahshur ticket).
Memphis Museum
The open-air Memphis Museum houses the colossal statue of Ramesses II (10 metres tall, lying down) and the alabaster Sphinx. The museum is small but significant — it was the capital of Ancient Egypt during the Old Kingdom. Allow 30-45 minutes to see all exhibits. The garden setting is pleasant for a short break.
