Walking Al Moez Street: A Journey Through Islamic Cairo
Al Moez Street (Sharia Al-Muizz li-Din Allah) is the historic spine of Islamic Cairo, stretching nearly one kilometer from Bab al-Futuh in the north to Bab Zuweila in the south. Named after the fourth Fatimid caliph, Al-Muizz li-Din Allah, the street is one of the world's most concentrated collections of medieval Islamic architecture. It features mosques, madrasas (schools), hammams (bathhouses), sabils (water fountains), and caravanserais dating from the 10th to the 19th centuries. UNESCO has recognized the area as a World Heritage site, and much of the street has been pedestrianized and beautifully restored.
Walking Al Moez Street is essentially walking through 1,000 years of architectural history. Key landmarks include the Qalawun Complex (a hospital, madrasa, and mausoleum built in 1285), the Beit al-Suhaymi (a beautifully preserved 17th-century Ottoman mansion), and the Mosque of Al-Aqmar (the earliest stone-built Fatimid mosque in Cairo, dated 1125). The street is flanked by historic markets (suqs) selling traditional crafts, copperware, textiles, perfumes, and spices, creating a living museum atmosphere.

Key Stops and Tips for Korean Travelers
A complete walk of Al Moez Street takes 1.5 to 2 hours without stops, but most visitors spend 3–4 hours including visits to the major monuments. Start from Bab al-Futuh in the north and walk south. The Qalawun Complex should be your first major stop — its hospital was centuries ahead of its time. Midway, take a break at the Al-Aqmar Mosque courtyard, then visit Beit al-Suhaymi to experience a traditional Cairo home. End at Bab Zuweila, where you can climb the minaret for a panoramic view over the district.
Al Moez Street connects naturally to Khan el-Khalili bazaar, making it easy to combine both in one afternoon. The best time to visit is late afternoon (3 PM onward) when the light casts warm tones on the stone facades and the shops are fully open. Evening visits are also magical when the historic buildings are lit. Friday mornings are crowded (post-prayer), while Sunday through Wednesday are quieter. Korean travelers will appreciate that many shopkeepers speak basic English, and some street signs include English transliterations.
- Spend 3–4 hours visiting Qalawun Complex, Beit al-Suhaymi, and Bab Zuweila
- Combine with Khan el-Khalili bazaar in one afternoon
