A Typical Day, Hour by Hour
08:00 Pickup to 14:00 — the Desert Route
Door-to-door pickup from your Cairo or Giza hotel around 08:00, then the 90-minute to 2-hour drive to Fayoum. Tunis Village's whitewashed walls and its Egyptian open-buffet breakfast open the morning, then the dedicated 4WD takes you off-road across the dunes to Wadi El-Hitan's whale fossils, the Panorama ridge, Magic Lake and the Wadi El-Rayan falls, with a relaxed local lunch in between. The off-road stretches stay with the safari car, so the main van stays clean.
15:00 to 21:00 — Dunes, BBQ and the Sky
Mid-afternoon you hit the golden dunes: sandboarding, then sweet Bedouin tea brewed the traditional way. Around 17:00 you move to the desert camp — free time to walk the dunes or simply sit with tea while the team prepares the grill. Dinner is served at dusk around the fire — chicken, kofta, rice, soup and salad — and stargazing runs until the Milky Way is high overhead. The return drive lands you back in Cairo around 21:00.

Camp Setup and Facilities
You eat at a proper low table with low desert seating around a central fire. The camp has shaded rest areas, basic washing facilities and a lantern-lit dining space; there is no overnight stay on this tour, so no bedding is needed. Bottled water is provided all day.
The BBQ Menu and Dietary Needs
Dinner is charcoal-grilled chicken and kofta with rice, vegetable soup, fresh salad and bread, served family-style. Vegetarian plates are arranged with advance notice — just mention it when you book. Dessert is the sky: the camp sits far from any town lights.
Evening Clothes — the One Rule That Matters
Desert nights cool down fast, and the stargazing hour keeps you outside for one to two hours after dark. A light jacket or a scarf over your daytime clothes is the most useful thing you can carry; everything else stays as comfortable as the day.

On a clear night there is the Milky Way core, the Andromeda galaxy as a faint patch, and shooting stars after midnight. Winter skies (October–March) are the clearest; summer nights are shorter but the desert still delivers. If clouds roll in, the guide moves the camp to the next clear spot.
The Long History Under Your Feet
A Breadbasket of the Pharaohs and the Lake That Remains
People have farmed the Fayoum basin since prehistoric times. Around 2000 BC, in the Middle Kingdom, the pharaohs — above all Amenemhat III — channelled the Nile's water through a canal the Greeks later called the Bahr Yusuf and turned this basin into one of the great granaries of the ancient world. The capital Crocodilopolis was a sacred centre of the crocodile god Sobek, and the huge temple complex left by the king nearby — the famous "labyrinth" in Greek and Roman accounts — was counted among the wonders of Egypt. The great lake that those waters fed survives today as Lake Qarun, one of the oldest natural lakes on Earth, resting about 45 metres below sea level, and its shore has carried the orchards and fields of the oasis for 4,000 years.
Valley of the Whales and the Fayoum Portraits
The same region holds one of the wonders of the world: Wadi El-Hitan, the Valley of the Whales, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site whose skeletons — 40 million years old, some still showing a hind limb — are the clearest record on land of whales returning to the ocean, and proof that this desert was once a sea. And the same oasis handed down a quieter, more human treasure: the Fayoum mummy portraits, intimate painted faces set on the mummies of its Roman-age families, among the oldest portrait paintings to survive from antiquity, many of which are now held in Cairo's museums.

With Children
Kids love the whale fossils, the waterfall and the ride down the golden dunes; the camp is flat and open, dinner comes out early enough for small kids, and the campfire is usually the part of the day they remember most. Bring snacks and a charger for the drives — the van has USB ports.

The day runs 12–14 hours and includes desert roads, so it suits travellers comfortable with long days. Shade, comfort stops and seating are handled all the way, and the camp has proper chairs. How is this different from the regular Fayoum day tour?
The regular Fayoum tour sightsees during the day and drives back to Cairo. This full-day version adds a desert camp BBQ dinner and Milky Way stargazing after dark, running 12–14 hours from an 08:00 pickup to a 21:00 return. Wadi El-Hitan is always included here, which many operators cut because of the distance.
What are the entrance fees and how do I pay them?
Two fees are paid on site directly, not through your guide: the national park entry at $10 per person and the whale museum at $15 per person. Both are official Egyptian government rates. Bring clean, undamaged USD notes — $1 bills are not accepted. The Tunis Village breakfast buffet is roughly $10 per person and is also paid on the spot; you can skip it and start the tour straight away if you prefer.
What is served at the BBQ dinner?
BBQ chicken grilled the Egyptian way over the fire, with rice, vegetable soup and salad. It is included in the tour price. If you have a food allergy or a dietary requirement, tell us when you book and we will arrange it.
Will I really see the Milky Way?
After dinner we move deeper into the desert where there is no artificial light at all. On clear nights the Milky Way is visible to the naked eye. Desert nights are colder than people expect, so bring a light jacket or hoodie — you will be outside for one to two hours.
Is this suitable if I only have a couple of days in Cairo?
Yes — that is the main reason travellers pick it. Fayoum is only 1 hour 40 minutes to 2 hours from Cairo or Giza, so you get desert, lakes, fossils, a waterfall, dinner and stargazing without giving up a hotel night or booking an internal flight. Minimum 2 travellers.

Two fees are paid directly on site, not through your guide: $10 for the national park and $15 for the whale museum. These are official government rates. $1 bills are not accepted and torn or marked notes are often refused, so bring clean, newer USD. The Tunis Village breakfast buffet (~$10) is also paid on the spot.
What to Wear & Bring
Layers matter on this tour more than any other: it is hot in the open desert at midday and cold at the camp after dark. Bring a light jacket or hoodie for the stargazing hour, sunglasses, a hat, sunscreen, and shoes you do not mind filling with sand for the dunes and sandboarding.

Pickup is 08:00 and return is around 21:00 — 12 to 14 hours. Breakfast in Tunis Village is optional and can be skipped for an earlier start. The BBQ dinner at the camp is included. Between the two, bring water and a snack; there are few shops on the desert route.
