The morning starts at Shali Fortress, the 13th-century citadel raised from salt and mud brick that dissolved during three days of unprecedented rain in 1926 — the ruin that remains is far more atmospheric than the original. From its heights you look down over palm groves and the roofs of the old town. Then comes Cleopatra's Spring, a beautiful natural pool of warm mineral water in the middle of the desert. The oasis charm of Siwa — its silence, its light, its lanes shaded by date palms — is around you at every step.
The Salt Lakes — Water That Holds You
A little beyond the town lie the famous salt lakes of Siwa. The water is so saturated with salt that the body floats almost without effort, smooth and calm, drifting slowly on the surface of a mirror that reflects the desert sky. The white shore, the blue horizon and the sand dunes framing the scene make a pure composition, and the photograph is exactly what you see. It is the classic image of the oasis, and the perfect quiet break before the open desert.
The Great Sand Sea — 4x4 Safari and a Desert Camp BBQ
In the afternoon the road ends and the golden desert begins. The tour crosses the dunes aboard a 4x4, climbing and descending giant golden slopes deep into the Great Sand Sea. Near sunset the drive arrives at a desert camp set among the dunes, where a BBQ dinner is served around the fire. As darkness falls, with zero light pollution for hundreds of kilometres, the Milky Way appears above the camp in extraordinary clarity, and meteors cross the sky as you watch from your tent. Tents and all camping equipment are provided, so the desert night is simply yours to enjoy.
Sunrise Over the Dunes and Marsa Matrouh on the Return
On the final morning the tour climbs the dune above camp to watch the sunrise pour gold across the Sand Sea, then enjoys a camp breakfast before heading back. The return road follows the Mediterranean, with a beautiful stop at Marsa Matrouh, where clear emerald water fills quiet coves and you can breathe the sea air from the shore. You arrive back in Cairo at 19:00 on the final day.
Siwa's Legend — the Oracle of Amun and Alexander the Great
The Oracle of Amun and Alexander's Visit, 331 BC
Long before any tour arrived, travellers came to Siwa on purpose. The oracle of the god Amun, near the hill of Aghurmi, was one of the most respected shrines of the ancient world — and in 331 BC, Alexander the Great crossed the desert expressly to consult it, marching far from the coast with his army to be received by the priests. Tradition says the oracle welcomed him as the son of the god, a blessing that carried through his entire legend. Standing at those ruins, looking at the same desert he crossed, is to step into one of history's most legendary moments.
The Salt Fortress, the Siwi Language and an Isolated Culture
For centuries Siwa lived wrapped in its own world, separated from the Nile Valley by an immense sea of sand — and it kept treasures of its own. The Siwi language, spoken nowhere else in Egypt, belongs to the southern Berber family of North Africa. Siwa's salt, prized and traded across the desert and to the Mediterranean for millennia, gave the oasis its fame, and the walls of Shali Fortress are literally built of that salt. Walk in slowly, lean back and you simply float — the water is too dense to sink in. The lakes are shallow, clear and warm, and the salt crust glows milk-white under the surface. Fresh water for rinsing is provided at the stop, so you can change back into dry clothes before the dunes.

Wear swimwear under your clothes and leave your towel on the jeep. Salt water stings in the eyes, so rinse after and keep the bottled water the jeep carries. Even in winter the midday sun keeps the water pleasant.

You sleep in a roomy two-person nomad tent with a proper mattress and blankets; in winter an extra fleece liner is provided. The camp has a main fire area with low wooden seats, a dining table, and basic wash facilities. Electricity for phone charging runs in the evening, and lanterns light the camp after sunset.
The BBQ Dinner and Camp Breakfast
Dinner is the camp centrepiece: chicken, kofta and vegetables grilled over charcoal, served with rice, fresh salad, bread and tahini around the fire. Breakfast the next morning is eggs, bread, cheese, olives, jam and black tea before the sunrise drive. Vegetarian plates are arranged if you tell the guide in advance.

I have never camped in the desert. Will I be fine?
Yes. Tents and all camping equipment are provided and set up for you — there is nothing to bring or pitch. The desert can get cool at night depending on the season, so pack one light long-sleeve layer or a jacket. Bring swimwear and a towel for Cleopatra Spring and the hot-spring pool, and sunglasses, since salt water stings the eyes.
Is Korean spoken on the tour?

What to Pack

Sleeping on the Overnight Coach
