Day one opens with a private pickup at your Cairo hotel and a drive into the Western Desert, where the salt lakes of Siwa welcome you before a night in the desert camp beneath the stars. Day two begins with sunrise above the dunes and continues along the Mediterranean coast toward Alexandria. Day three is given entirely to Alexandria's most beautiful addresses — Montazah, Qaitbay Citadel and the Bibliotheca Alexandrina — before the relaxed return to Cairo. Every kilometre of the loop is carried in the same comfortable private vehicle.

Day 1 — Siwa, the Heart of the Western Desert
Salt Lakes and Cleopatra's Spring
Siwa's salt lakes are polished mirrors set on the sand, water so dense that you float without the slightest effort while the desert and the sky reflect perfectly on the surface. Nearby, Cleopatra's Spring rises warm from the earth — a mineral hot spring in the middle of a desert, and a moment that feels far older than the road that brought you here.
Shali Fortress and the Sanctuary of Amun
At the heart of Siwa's old quarter rises the ochre silhouette of Shali, an ancient fortress built of the oasis' own salt-soaked clay, glowing against the late sun. Beyond it lies the sanctuary that made Siwa famous among the ancients — the Oracle of Amun, reached in 331 BC by Alexander the Great, who crossed the desert to consult it and was crowned in its shadow a chosen son of the god. More than two thousand years later, that corner of the desert still reads like one of the most private pages of ancient history.
Desert Camp Night — BBQ Dinner and the Milky Way
Night falls over the camp with a slow sunset flush crossing the dunes, and dinner is a firelit BBQ beneath the open sky. When the flames settle, the desert performs: the Milky Way overhead, stars packed edge to edge and bright enough to make the whole night a spectacle. Day 2 — From the Dunes to the Mediterranean
Sunrise over the Great Sand Sea
Before the desert fully wakes, a 4x4 climbs the tall dunes of the Great Sand Sea and places you at the rim of dawn, where the rising light floods the rippled sand. A sandboarding run turns the morning into pure desert joy — the very scene that has made this corner of Egypt beloved for generations.
Alexandria, the City of Alexander the Great
Alexandria was founded by Alexander the Great in 331 BC where the Mediterranean bends inland, and over the centuries it grew into the most radiant city on the sea. Its Pharos lighthouse was counted among the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, a light that guarded the harbour for more than a thousand years. And beside it, the Ptolemaic kings raised the Library and the Museion, gardens of knowledge for the finest minds of antiquity — a brilliance the modern city still carries.
Day 3 — Alexandria, Pearl of the Mediterranean
Montazah Palace and Its Royal Gardens
Montazah is Alexandria's seaside palace quarter: delicate towers and gardens that step down to the open sea, palms and pines bending toward the waterline. It is the gentlest episode of the whole trip — an unhurried walk beside the Mediterranean, exactly as it should be before the grand finale.
Qaitbay Citadel and the Bibliotheca Alexandrina
On the harbour's edge stands Qaitbay Citadel, raised in the fifteenth century on the very ground of the Pharos — the blocks of the ancient lighthouse remain inside its walls so you can stand on the site of a lost Wonder of the Ancient World. A short walk away, the new Bibliotheca Alexandrina rises above the sea like a silver disc and keeps the memory of the Ptolemaic Library and the Museion alive. Here the book of the city reads itself to you.
A Last Seafood Dinner and the Return
Before the road home, Alexandria offers the farewell: freshly caught seafood by the sea while the sun sinks into the Mediterranean — the taste of three days gathered into one evening. Then the van returns toward Cairo and sets you down at the hotel door with two Egypts and a starry night folded between them.
Siwa’s Salt Lakes — the Water You Can’t Sink In
The Floating Stop
Walk in, lean back and you stay on the surface with zero effort — the same principle as the Dead Sea. The lake is shallow and clear, and the salt crust glitters through the water. Fresh water for rinsing and a place to change are at the stop, so you return to the road clean and dry.
Plan for It
Wear swimwear under your day clothes and keep a towel in the van. Sunglasses protect your eyes from the salt, and the van always carries water bottles. Allow about 40 minutes, then the route continues into the Great Sand Sea dunes.
Day 1 in Alexandria — Hour by Hour
Catacombs, Citadel and the Library — in the Right Order
Morning pickup from your Cairo hotel puts you at Kom el-Shoqafa Catacombs before the tour crowds, then at the Qaitbay Citadel for the sea-light around noon, and at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina in the early afternoon — the quietest hours of the day. Each site gets the time it deserves, and the route never backtracks.
Seafood Lunch and the Long Drive West
Lunch is on the Corniche at a trusted local seafood spot — grilled fish, shrimp and calamari with the sea in front of you — around 13:30. From Alexandria the van turns south-west toward the Western Desert; the drive to Siwa takes roughly 6 hours with comfort stops, and you arrive in time for a late dinner in town or at the camp.

The split is roughly Cairo to Alexandria in 3 hours, Alexandria to Siwa in 6, Siwa to Marsa Matrouh in 2, and Marsa Matrouh back to Cairo in 3. October–April is the sweet spot: Alexandria runs 15–24°C with a sea breeze, Siwa days sit at 20–30°C and nights drop to 8–15°C — the classic desert swing. May–September is hot, with Siwa reaching 38–42°C by day, and the salt lakes become the best part of the route. Winter nights at the camp genuinely need a warm jacket and layers.

The route is timed around two lights: the late-afternoon sun on the Qaitbay Citadel's Mediterranean walls, and the first stars over the Siwa dunes after dinner. Both arrive on this exact schedule — no extra stops are needed.
Packing for Two Worlds in One Bag
For Alexandria and the Van
Light, comfortable clothes for the city, a sun hat, sunglasses, sunscreen and sandals that work on both the Corniche and the dunes. A single change of clothes for day two is enough; the camp has basic washing facilities.
For the Desert Night
A warm layer is non-negotiable — a fleece or jacket plus socks for the roughly 10°C night. Swimwear for the salt lakes is a must, a head torch or phone light for the camp, and a power bank: the van charges phones during the day, but the night is long and the photos are endless.

The Oracle of Amun and Alexander the Great
In 331 BC, Alexander the Great crossed Egypt's Western Desert to consult the famous oracle of Amun at Siwa. The sanctuary had been a celebrated centre of prophecy for centuries, and its priests declared him the son of the god — granting the divine legitimacy his empire needed. That visit made Siwa one of the great religious destinations of antiquity, and the ruined walls of the temple still stand on the hill of Aghurmi above the oasis today.
Alexandria's Two Lost Wonders — the Library and the Lighthouse
Ancient Alexandria held two of the world's greatest achievements in one city. The Ptolemaic Library, part of the Hellenistic Museion, was the largest knowledge collection of the ancient world; the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, opened in 2002, rises beside that same site. Off the shore, the Lighthouse of Alexandria — one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World — guided shipping for some 1,500 years before earthquakes toppled it. How is this different from the standard Siwa tour?
The standard Siwa tour goes straight to the oasis and back. This route spends the whole first day in Alexandria on the Mediterranean — Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa, Qaitbay Citadel, the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, seafood and a corniche sunset — before heading into the Western Desert for Siwa. You get sea and Sahara in the same 2 nights and 3 days.
What does the price include and what is paid on site?
Pricing is per person and drops with group size: $350 for 2, $300 for 3, $250 for 4 and $220 from 5 travellers. The rate covers the private air-conditioned van for the entire route, an English/Korean-communicating local guide, the desert camping tent and bedding, the traditional BBQ chicken dinner and camp breakfast, and every site listed in the itinerary. Paid separately: the $13 military permit on arrival in Siwa, entrance tickets, meals outside the camp, any hotel other than the desert camp, and personal expenses.
Where do we sleep on this tour?
One night is spent in a desert camp in Siwa with tents and bedding prepared for you — that night is included. Accommodation anywhere else is not part of the package, so if you want a hotel night in Alexandria instead of the overnight drive, tell us when you book and we will quote it.
What is the Mountain of the Dead, and can everyone go in?
It is a hill in Siwa honeycombed with ancient tombs and mummies. The name sounds grim but it is a serious archaeological site. Some sections are difficult to enter without an official guide — travelling with us means you see areas ordinary sightseeing skips.
Is the drive too long to enjoy?
Taking the public bus to Siwa is 14 hours one way with no stops you control and unreliable air conditioning. We run the entire route in a modern private air-conditioned van from your Cairo hotel door and back, with comfort stops, so the distance is genuinely restful rather than exhausting.

Best Time to Go
October to April is ideal — 20–30°C in Alexandria and comfortable desert days in Siwa. Alexandria can be windy and occasionally rainy in winter, so bring a light waterproof layer. Summer works too but start early; Siwa daytime can pass 38°C while desert nights still drop to 10–15°C.
What to Wear
Alexandria is a coastal city where normal city clothes are fine, but dress modestly for the Catacombs and any religious site. For Siwa: breathable long sleeves for sun protection, a scarf or buff against sand during the 4x4 safari, sturdy closed shoes, swimwear for the salt lakes and Cleopatra Spring, and a warm layer for the camp at night.
Cash and Permits
The $13 military permit for Siwa is paid in cash on arrival, and a passport copy is usually requested — bring one. Entrance tickets in Siwa (Mountain of the Dead, springs) are cash only, while Cairo and Alexandria sites often take cards. Carry clean USD and some Egyptian pounds. Students should bring an international student card for discounts.
Seafood in Alexandria
Order by pointing at the fish on ice rather than from a menu — that is how locals do it, and it is priced by weight. Ask your guide to confirm the price per kilo before it is cooked. Grilled sea bass, prawns and calamari are the standards, usually served with tahini, salad and bread.
